Antigua was originally called "Waladli" - a name from the Kalinago language meaning "Island of Fish Oil".
Barbuda also has an indigenous name: "Wa'omoni", meaning "Land of the Herons". This name comes from the Kalinago language as well and refers to the large number of herons inhabiting the island.
These historical names reflect the deep rooted connection of the islands with their original inhabitants and natural surrounding.
Antigua is home to the Antiguan Racer - one of the world's rarest snakes. Once nearly extinct, with fewer than 100 left, this harmless snake now thrives again on small offshore islands thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.
Redonda, a rocky little island west of Antigua, was once overrun by goats and rats. Today, it's a protected nature reserve where native species like the Redonda Ground Dragon and rare birds have returned and thriving again.
From steel pan rhythms to lively soca and calypso beats - music is part of everyday life in Antigua. The island celebrates its rich culture every summer during the famous Antigua Carnival, one of the most energetic festivals in the Caribbean.
